Male Mental Health Awareness Assembly Focus
This week’s assembly was a powerful exploration of Movember and a crucial focus on male mental health led by Mr. M. Brotherton. The session aimed to raise awareness about critical issues affecting men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, male suicide, and overall mental health.
Mr. Brotherton began by emphasising the importance of Movember in shedding light on these issues and encouraged our pupils to reflect on the male figures in their lives. He shared valuable insights into what Movember is doing to address these concerns and how everyone can contribute and support the cause.
Celebrities were spotlighted, emphasising that everyone, regardless of fame or strength, faces mental health challenges. The assembly debunked gender stereotypes, challenging the notion that ‘boys don’t cry’ and stressing the importance of emotional expression.
Statistics were shared to underline the urgency of the matter: 1 in 8 males reports suffering from a mental health condition, equating to 16,000 males in Burntwood alone seeking help. Shockingly, 60 men worldwide commit suicide every hour, with 76% of all UK suicides being men, thus highlighting the urgency of addressing male mental health.
The discussion extended to body dysmorphia, revealing that 28% of adult men over 18 have felt anxious about their body image. Pupils were informed about available support and how to aid others facing body image struggles. A powerful video featuring Eddie Hall and Brian Shaw highlighted that even the strongest men acknowledge and express their emotions.
Pupils were made aware of the school’s support network and educated on combating poor mental health through exercise, sleep, and avoiding stimulants like caffeine. The importance of recognising signs of depression in friends was highlighted through an insightful video.
Ms. N. Mason, our Headteacher, emphasised breaking the stigma around male mental health, stating, “Male mental health is often a taboo subject. We hope that by openly discussing these issues, we can collectively contribute to breaking down the stigma. Our goal is for all pupils to be aware of the support systems available in school.”
Let’s continue the conversation, support one another, and contribute to a school environment where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
