Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities
We are committed to inclusivity and supporting individual pupils, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We know the value of creating a supportive environment and providing the necessary resources and expertise to ensure every pupil can thrive academically and personally, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.
At Chase Terrace Academy, our strong team of Teaching Assistants is based in our new Learning Support Hub and led by our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCO) and Assistant SENDCO. The team work with children and their families, alongside our academic and pastoral teams, to ensure personalised support that meets the specific needs of our pupils.
We understand that children learn best when they are taught by subject experts. Our specialist academic teachers understand how to adapt their teaching approaches and resources for pupils with diverse learning profiles. Our staff are trained to use different teaching and learning strategies and to adapt their teaching and resources to cater to the needs of all pupils, making learning accessible to all. This adaptability ensures that all pupils, regardless of their learning differences, can engage with the curriculum effectively and achieve success.
Sometimes children need a little more help with elements of the curriculum and school life. We offer a range of interventions to support them with getting to grips with the fundamentals, whilst building their confidence and independence as learners.
The Management Team is made up of Mrs T Waters (SENCO) and Mrs R Hughes (Assistant SENCO), who lead a team of Teaching Assistants and Senior Teaching Assistants, some of whom work across a range of departments whilst others work more closely with core areas of the curriculum to develop a subject specialism that can be utilised to support students, particularly during their KS4 and KS5 courses.
The Department works closely with a range of outside agencies to ensure we always have the most specialised and experienced professionals supporting pupils with specific needs. These agencies include SENSS (Special Educational Needs Support Services), AOT (Autism Outreach Team), Behaviour Support, PDSS (Physical Disability Support Service), SALT (Speech and Language Therapy). We also take every opportunity to train with the professionals to extend and disseminate their good practice through the Department and the school as a whole.
Where parents are concerned about a pupil’s progress, or wish to discuss a particular learning need we are happy to meet and discuss how best we can work together to meet those needs.
Appointments can be made via Mrs L Brown, the Learning Support Department’s Administrative Assistant.
