Last week, the community and charity committee from the Pupil Leadership team met with two members of the Burntwood Action Group to make plans for the Poppy community project that they are embarking on.

The Burntwood Action Group have been responsible for decorating Princes Park for Armistice Day with poppies made from plastic bottles. As part of the pupil leadership team’s growing involvement with the community, they will be supporting the Burntwood Action Group in creating this instillation this year. In a recent House event, students collected a number of bags of plastic bottles which they will be repurposing into poppies.

The pupils were told about why this instillation is important and how it has worked in the past. They were then shown how to make the flowers before being able to have a go themselves. The project will begin this week and will continue up until Armistice Day.

Miss H Pickerill, Pupil Leadership Coordinator, said, “The pupils were incredibly enthusiastic about the project. They asked lots of questions and learned how to make the poppies very quickly. They are really excited about getting started with all of the bottles we have collected. We are thrilled that the Burntwood Action Group members gave up their time to come in to speak with the pupils and to give the school the opportunity to be part of the project. The project is not only important for the community element but it also teaches pupils about the importance of Armistice Day and recycling.”
