Our Year 12 students recently took part in a forensics experience at Staffordshire University. This involved a crime scene investigation where students were given roles including photographic or sketching the crime scene, numbering significant evidence and using UV light to detect hidden evidence which could pose as bodily fluids.
They also had the opportunity to use the digital forensic ‘XAMN’ software, used by police forces today. This allowed students to understand how to use this to uncover significant evidence within a smartphone by analysing pictures, messages and contacts within someone’s mobile phone.
Finally, students visited a forensics analysis laboratory, testing substances and looking to identify different types of drugs with mixing agents by looking at how the colours change when mixed with certain substances.
This opportunity not only allowed students to learn more about pathways into forensics but also gave them a chance to ask career related questions to the specialists that ran these sessions at the university.
The university also praised our students for being very selective and mindful when uncovering evidence in the crime scene – we are very proud!
