This week, our assembly focus has been on celebrating Pride Month, which takes place throughout June. Led by Mr. O. Cooper, our assemblies have explained the significance of Pride Month and the history of the LGBTQIA+ movement. We explored the meaning behind the LGBTQIA+ acronym, the diverse flags that represent the community, and the origins of the first pride flag, which made its debut in San Francisco in 1978.
We also looked back at the first-ever pride march in London, where 2,000 people gathered to stand up for LGBTQIA+ rights. In contrast, the most recent Pride march in Birmingham this May saw over 75,000 attendees, showcasing the incredible growth in support and solidarity for the LGBTQIA+ community.
At our school, we are proud to support and stand with the LGBTQIA+ community. As part of our ongoing commitment, we host a Pride Group every Thursday lunchtime, providing a safe and welcoming space for all pupils to attend and be themselves.
Happy Pride Month!
