This week, our Year 10 English lessons with Mrs Lewis have been diving into Macbeth, a key text for next year’s Year 11 English Literature exams. Mrs. Lewis brought in a 200-year-old King James Bible to highlight the historical context behind the play.
Macbeth was written for King James I, flattering his views on witchcraft and regicide. The class was especially intrigued to learn that the Bible omits the word “tyrant”—a central term in Macbeth. King James I had his translators replace it with “troubling” or “oppressor” to avoid criticism of his rule.
It’s wonderful to see the pupils making cross-curricular connections between History and English!
