Curriculum Intent Statement for English

At Chase Terrace Academy we aspire for all of our pupils to achieve greater things than they ever thought possible.

We pride ourselves on being a warm and welcoming school that places community at the heart of everything we do. Our ambitious curriculum is enriching and inclusive, providing challenge and breadth for all. This empowers our pupils to become compassionate, confident and creative individuals who are resilient, respectful and equipped with a desire to take up a fulfilling role in society and the wider world.

In English, we aspire to foster a love of our subject through an appreciation of literature from the very beginnings of the English language to more modern texts. We encourage pupils to appreciate the way that language has evolved throughout literature into the language that they use today. We expose students to a variety of forms from a variety of literature time periods to show them how rich and diverse English is.

Throughout KS3, we take pupils on a journey through the history of literature from Greek Mythology, to Shakespeare and to modern texts. This gives them the fundamental knowledge and understanding about the nuances of the English language that is needed to be successful at GCSE, A Level and their life beyond school. Throughout the curriculum we aim to use authentic, meaningful and relevant topics, texts and discussions to provide motivation and to positively contribute to the pupils’ cultural capital and to widen their experience and understanding of the world.

We understand that English is the foundation of all other subjects. Firstly, the role that it plays within pupils’ understanding of society and morality to develop their empathic understanding but also the role that it plays in pupils’ ability to communicate their ideas and to develop their critical thinking skills that will benefit them in life beyond school. We teach pupils to express themselves confidently and creatively in both the written and spoken word.
