The Scholastic Book Fair is Coming to CTA!

Don’t forget that the Scholastic Book Fair is returning to Chase Terrace Academy on Wednesday, 15th May! It will be set up in the library for an entire week, offering our pupils the chance to explore and purchase a wide range of books.

Pupils can visit the book fair at the following times:

– Before form time

– During break

– At lunchtime

– During library lessons

There are over 200 books to choose from including fiction, non-fiction, box sets and activity books. There will also be a selection that have been recommended through BookTok.

To make things easier, there are three ways to pay for books at the fair:

1. Cash: Pupils can bring cash to purchase books on the day.

2. Wish List: Pupils can fill in a Wish List, and parents/carers can pay online. The books can then be collected from the library.

3. Gift Vouchers: Parents/carers can purchase Book Fair gift vouchers from the Scholastic website. Find out more at https://bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/travelling-books/parents

By supporting the book fair, you help our school library earn free books! The more books we sell, the more we can add to our collection, benefitting all of our pupils.

Pupil Leadership Team Restructure!

We’re thrilled to announce that our Pupil Leadership Team has undergone a recent restructuring, providing new opportunities for pupil involvement. Recently, all pupils were invited to apply to join a committee within the Pupil Leadership structure. Miss H Pickerill, Pupil Leadership Co-ordinator, held meetings to formally welcome the new members, presenting them with membership badges and having them sign a contract to join the team.

Meetings for this week are scheduled, and the full timetable can be found on the ‘Terrace Talk’ parent bulletin, available on the ‘announcements’ tab in the MyChildAtSchool App. Don’t forget to check it for more information on upcoming events and important school news.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2024

This week is National Mental Health Awareness Week, and we want to ensure that all of our pupils know where to find support within our school. Mental health is important, and we are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for everyone.

Here’s where pupils can find mental health support in school:

Progress Teams: Our dedicated year group offices are staffed by trained personnel who can offer guidance and support. If you’re not sure who to talk to, start here.

Safeguarding Team: Mrs D. Thombs, Mrs C. Woodhouse, Mr D. Inman, and Mr J. Cain are part of our Safeguarding Team and are always ready to help with any concerns.

Form Tutors: Your form tutor is another great resource for advice, support, or just someone to talk to.

First Aid Team: Led by our First Aider, Ms A. Elliot, the First Aid team is available to support you in times of mental health distress or emergencies.

Mental Health First Aiders: Our trained Mental Health First Aiders are here to support both staff and pupils with mental health issues. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need assistance.

Remember, you’re not alone. Our school is a community, and we’re here for each other. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or just need someone to talk to, please reach out. Let’s take care of ourselves and each other this week and beyond.

Attention Year 11 and Year 13 Pupils!

We’re now entering the second week of your GCSE and A-Level exams, and you’ve all been doing an amazing job! Keep up the great work by continuing to revise, attending your revision sessions, and making it to the pre-exam briefings on time.

Below is the timetable for this week’s exams. Make sure you know when and where your exams are, and don’t forget to bring everything you need.

National Deaf Awareness Week

This week, our assembly focus has been on National Deaf Awareness Week, celebrated in the UK from 6th to 13th May. This important week aims to raise awareness about deafness and hearing loss, and we took the opportunity to educate our pupils on how they can support their peers who experience these challenges.

During the assembly, pupils watched a video that highlighted ways to foster a more inclusive environment for those with hearing loss. They also learned that deafness is a “hidden disability,” affecting around 12 million people in the UK—that’s 1 in 6 people!

We were also honoured to have Willow, a Year 8 pupil, share a presentation about her experience with cochlear implants due to her TMC1 gene. Willow’s presentation explained what cochlear implants are and what life is like for her with them. She also shared valuable tips for communicating with people who have hearing loss. These include:

– Not shouting or exaggerating mouth patterns: This can alter lip patterns, making it harder to understand.

– Avoiding covering your mouth or turning away while talking.

– Never giving up on a conversation.

A big thank you to Willow for sharing her story and educating us on this crucial topic.

Supporting Stephen’s Story for the Teenage Cancer Trust

In memory of Stephen Sutton and his incredible fundraising efforts, our Pupil Leadership Team have been selling Teenage Cancer Trust: Stephen’s Story wristbands to support the fundraising that Stephen started for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

In memory of Stephen and to mark the 10-year anniversary of his passing, we encourage all pupils and staff to wear something yellow alongside their school uniform on Tuesday 14th May. Let’s come together as a community to celebrate Stephen’s remarkable life and his commitment to helping others.

Geography in Action: Year 10 pupils tackle a volcanic…

Our Year 10 Geography class recently participated in a simulation exercise focused on responding to a hypothetical volcanic eruption on the island of Mauritius. The pupils were tasked with coordinating rescue efforts, with live updates provided by a simulated helicopter that allowed them to analyse the situation and make strategic decisions regarding evacuations, safety protocols, and the allocation of resources.

This activity required the pupils to think quickly, collaborate effectively, and apply their geographical knowledge to address a complex, real-world situation. We are pleased to see how they demonstrated strong problem-solving abilities and teamwork throughout the exercise, reinforcing the skills that are crucial in crisis management scenarios.

Exciting Workshop with ‘Master Glass’ Stained Glass Artist!

We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Steve from ‘Master Glass’, a renowned stained glass artist from Sutton Coldfield, to our school. Steve shared fascinating insights into the art of stained glass, bringing with him samples from a piece that was over 100 years old!

During the session, our pupils had the unique opportunity to create their own stained glass samples, learning how to use metal oxide to add colours to glass. Some pupils even got the chance to try their hand at glass cutting! This hands-on experience is a fantastic way to explore the traditional craft of stained glass and expand our pupils’ skills and knowledge in the field of art and design.

Mrs. H Van Daalen, our Subject Lead for Art, Photography, Design and Technology, commented, “Steve had a fantastic way with the pupils, delivering a calm, productive, and inspirational session where pupils could not only explore career opportunities in the arts but also create a piece to contribute to their final projects.”

We are so grateful to Steve for offering such an enriching experience and we look forward to seeing the stunning results from our talented pupils!

Year 8 Progress Evening

We are excited to invite all Year 8 parents/carers to our Progress Evening taking place tomorrow, Thursday 9th May, from 4:00 PM to 6:30 PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet with your child’s subject teachers and discuss their academic progress. All appointments will be conducted via video calls.

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email with all the necessary information, including the video call link for your appointments. We recommend logging in at least 5 minutes before your scheduled time to ensure everything runs smoothly.

If you experience any issues with logging in or do not have internet access, please contact the year office for assistance. Problems with logging in usually occur when there’s a mismatch in the information we have on our system. If needed, we can update your details to help you gain access.
